Generally, people do experience back pain that ranges from light to being severe. You are lucky if you are one of those people who can bear the pain. But what if you are one of those who cannot tolerate the pain? Lower back pain can really affect the day to day activities, particularly tasks that involve bending and twisting. Though there are already some researches and experiments being done to solve such problems, but many still believe that choosing the best mattress is the best solution for curing lower back pain.
What is a mattress?
A mattress is usually a rectangular pad of heavy cloth filled with soft material on an arrangement of coiled springs used as a bed or on a bed. It is made in variation of firm and soft to even out the pressure. There are some that are a lot firmer and is much preferred by those suffering from back pain, especially lower back pain. Just remember that never buy or purchase a new mattress without trying it out first, lying down into it to ensure that it is what you wanted. There are lots of stores that offer the customer to test the mattress first to make sure of costumer’s satisfaction. And when it comes to the price, it ranges from the most affordable to the expensive ones depending on the type and brand you go for.
In general, there are two kinds of mattresses that are offered and available in the market today. They are the inner spring and spring free mattresses. Inner spring can provide good back support but see to it that the thickness of the metal of the coil is proper. The reason being that the thickness of the metal can really affect the firmness and support. Spring free mattresses, as the name suggests, does not have any spring and provides the support and firmness only with the foam. The foam rises up to meet the body where it needs support. However, both kinds of mattress are good and choosing it just depends on the taste of the customer.

How to choose the best mattress for lower back pain?
Lower back pain is a hassle. According to many researches and experiments and also base from the experience of those people who have already suffered from pain in the lower back, mattresses have some positive effects on the pain. And the following are some tips in choosing the best mattress for lower back pain.
Check the firmness level of the mattress: Many people believe that the firmer the mattress the more the relief it provides to the lower back pain. But this belief is definitely wrong because according to some researches, the firmness of the mattress does not guarantee relief. It is more advisable to have a mattress that has medium firmness so that the pressure on the back can be evenly distributed unlike with the firm ones.
Take time to try out the mattress: “There is no harm in trying” – a saying that is definitely true. Of course, you want to ensure that you are satisfied with the mattress you want to buy, and so it would be better and in fact, strongly advised to try out the mattress before purchasing it. A common feedback from many people is that the best way to try it out is by lying on the bed on your natural position of sleeping for five minutes. And if you sleep on your stomach, take even longer to test. Do not forget that while you are lying you should realize how comfortable you feel especially on your back and watch out for uneven pressures. If possible, make sure that you get a warranty so that you can return it the moment you feel any discomfort during the first few days.
Add medium-firm memory-foam mattresses to your search if you can spend more: These mattresses contour to the shape of the body. The moment it will contour to the body shape, the person will feel more comfortable and won’t wake up with any lower back pain. In addition, the curve of the spine will help the customer to alleviate the pain and lessen it.
Avoid used mattresses: According to the Better Sleep Council, a mattress should be only used for ten years. It is just the same as their expiration date. If you are already using your mattresses for more than ten years, then find the time to look for a newer one and discard the old one as soon as you get the new one. The older the mattress the greater the possibility that you will feel pain and it will hurt your back instead of helping it.
While each individual body will respond differently to the mattresses, what is more important is that you buy one which you are comfortable in sleeping and it will eventually relieve your lower back pain.
